This Nerja–Frigiliana–Cómpeta motorhome route is for anyone who wants to leave the coast behind and head into the hills without driving loads of kilometres. In no time, you go from the Mediterranean to winding mountain roads, cobbled streets, and the authentic vibe of the white villages of La Axarquía.
It’s a 1–2 day getaway, perfect to link up with Route 1 (Nerja + Maro) or as a mini standalone trip starting from Málaga.
Quick route summary
🕒 Duration: 1–2 days
🧭 Ideal for: inland vibes, mountains, and village atmosphere
🎁 What you’ll get: scenic roads, great food, and views
The idea is simple: use Nerja as your base, head up to Frigiliana (one of Málaga’s prettiest white villages), and continue on to Cómpeta, known as the “balcony” of La Axarquía thanks to its views over the Mediterranean and the mountains.
Nerja: seaside starting point
Even though the goal of this route is the white villages, Nerja is still a great starting point because:
It’s easy to reach from Málaga via the A-7.
You’ve got supermarkets, petrol stations, and all the services you need to prep the motorhome.
You can squeeze in a quick stop at the Balcón de Europa, the area’s most famous viewpoint, hanging over the cliffs between Calahonda and El Salón beaches.
If you’re coming from Route 1 (Nerja + Maro), the motorhome will already be “ready for action,” so you can keep Nerja to a quick walk, a fast shop, and then head inland.
Frigiliana: postcard-perfect white village
From Nerja, you’re up in Frigiliana in just a few minutes. It’s a total switch: coast to inland, beach to mountains. Frigiliana sits on the slopes of the Sierra de Almijara, around 300 metres above sea level, and it’s often considered one of Andalusia’s most beautiful white villages—whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, and flowers everywhere.
What to do in Frigiliana
Get lost in the old town (Barribarto): steep streets, steps, tiled details, and super photogenic corners.
Hunt down viewpoints towards the Mediterranean: from several spots you can see the sea and the valleys of La Axarquía.
Stop for lunch: bars and restaurants serving Andalusian food, tapas, and local products (cane honey, wine, cured meats…).
Frigiliana is ideal for a slow morning or afternoon. The best plan is to park the motorhome in the lower area or in wider parking spots and walk up to the old town—don’t try to drive into the narrow streets.
Cómpeta: La Axarquía’s viewpoint
The third stop on the Nerja–Frigiliana–Cómpeta motorhome route takes you further inland on mountain roads until you reach Cómpeta. Here you’re properly in the heart of inland La Axarquía, with views towards the Sierras of Almijara and Tejeda, and the Mediterranean in the distance.
Cómpeta is well known for:
Its hillside location and spectacular views (hence the nickname “Balcony of the Costa del Sol”).
Its wine tradition: Muscat wines under the Málaga Designation of Origin.
Its cosmopolitan feel: a mix of local residents and people from other countries who’ve chosen the village as home.
What to do in Cómpeta
Stroll through the centre and Plaza Almijara, the village’s main square.
Visit the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (16th century), known as the “cathedral of La Axarquía.”
Try local wines and a hearty tapa after the mountain drive.
Here you really feel like you’re “hanging” between the mountains and the sea. It’s a perfect place to end the day with a sunset walk and a relaxed dinner.
How to split the route into 1 or 2 days
Option 1: Fast 1-day route
Morning: Málaga → quick practical stop in Nerja (shopping, short walk).
Midday–afternoon: Frigiliana (old town walk + lunch).
Late afternoon–night: Cómpeta (arrive while it’s still light, short walk + dinner).
Night: sleep in a parking area/motorhome spot in Cómpeta, or head back down towards the coast.
This option is intense but doable if you leave early and keep your stops clear.
Option 2: Relaxed 2-day route
Day 1
Málaga → Nerja → Frigiliana.
Spend the whole afternoon in Frigiliana: old town, cafés, photos, dinner with views.
Overnight nearby (larger car parks) or head back down to the coast and return up the next day.
Day 2
Drive up to Cómpeta at an easy pace, stopping at viewpoints.
Full walk around Cómpeta, lunch, and a long Spanish sobremesa.
Easy return to the coast or connect with another inland Axarquía route.
Practical tips for the Nerja – Frigiliana – Cómpeta route
To make this motorhome route run smoothly:
Roads: from Frigiliana onwards—and especially towards Cómpeta—there are bends. Nothing extreme, but take it slow and avoid driving at night if you don’t know the area.
Parking:
Nerja: use larger car parks a bit outside the old centre and walk in.
Frigiliana & Cómpeta: don’t take the motorhome into the old town; use the entrance car parks instead.
Weather: even close to the sea, inland villages get cooler at night—even in spring. Bring an extra layer.
Food: try local classics (goat stew, migas, cured meats, Muscat wines…). This route is as much about food as it is about scenery.
If you’ve already done coastal routes, this getaway shows you a different side of La Axarquía: inland hills and postcard-white villages… without straying too far from Málaga.
