It is an opportunity to explore villages, travel along back roads and experience the traditions that form part of each region’s identity.

When October arrives, Spain begins to change.

The forests take on golden hues, temperatures drop and the markets fill with produce heralding a new season. The first chestnuts appear, mushrooms take centre stage in many kitchens and hearty stews make a comeback on our tables.

It’s the perfect time of year for a leisurely holiday.

To stop off in a village you’ve never been to before, discover a little shop selling local produce, or sit down for a meal in a family-run restaurant where the recipes have been prepared in the same way for generations.

And if there’s one way to enjoy all that in complete freedom, it’s by travelling in a motorhome.

Today we’d like to suggest a tour of some of Spain’s most interesting spots, where you can discover the flavours of autumn.

Genal Valley: autumn is all about chestnuts

We begin our tour in the inland area of Málaga, in one of the most special parts of Andalusia in autumn.

The Genal Valley, situated in the Serranía de Ronda, is transformed when this time of year arrives.

Its chestnut groves are beginning to change colour and the white villages dotted across the mountains take on a peaceful atmosphere, quite unlike that of the coastal resorts during the summer.

Villages such as Pujerra, Parauta, Igualeja and Cartajima are good places to start when exploring this region.

Here, chestnuts are not simply a seasonal produce.

It forms part of the history, economy and traditions of its inhabitants.

During the autumn, the countryside is dotted with chestnut groves, and in some towns and villages, events are held centred around the harvest and local cuisine.

One of the best experiences is exploring the villages without a particularly demanding itinerary.

Stroll through its streets.

Stop off at a small bar.

Try traditional dishes.

And enjoy the colours of the landscape.

If you’re travelling by motorhome, it’s a good idea to plan your routes carefully. Some roads in the Genal Valley are narrow and winding, so it may be more convenient to park in designated areas and explore certain villages on foot or by alternative transport.

The best thing about this getaway is that you don’t need to travel far to feel as though you’ve discovered a completely different place.

The Sierra de Aracena: Iberian ham, mushrooms and charming villages

Our next stop takes us to the north of Huelva.

The Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park is one of those destinations that seem tailor-made for autumn.

The pastures, chestnut woods and small villages create the perfect landscape to explore during October and November.

But as well as its natural beauty, this region has a great deal to offer in terms of food and drink.

Iberian ham is one of its best-known products, particularly in towns such as Jabugo, where the tradition associated with the Iberian pig forms part of the local identity.

Also worth noting are the dishes made with mushrooms, which take centre stage during the season when weather conditions are favourable for their growth.

Aracena is a good starting point for the tour.

From there, you can explore villages such as Alájar, Fuenteheridos and Linares de la Sierra, where the traditional houses, cobbled streets and local restaurants invite you to enjoy a peaceful getaway.

It’s a good idea to spend the morning exploring one of these villages and save lunch for sampling the local cuisine.

Because there are journeys that are remembered for their scenery.

And others, too, because the food is so good.

La Rioja: vineyards, villages and the flavours of the grape harvest

Autumn is also a wonderful time to explore La Rioja.

After the summer months, the vineyards begin to change colour and the hills are transformed into a blend of reddish, yellow and ochre hues.

It’s one of those views that’s well worth taking in from the road.

But La Rioja has much more to offer than just wine.

Its cuisine is deeply rooted in local produce and traditional recipes.

Riojan-style potatoes, peppers, seasonal vegetables and dishes made with local produce are all part of a cuisine that is particularly well suited to cooler days.

Haro is one of the best-known towns in the region for its wine-making tradition.

From there, you can plan a route taking in villages such as Briones or San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where vineyard landscapes blend with historic architecture and views over the Ebro Valley.

For those travelling by motorhome, it is particularly worthwhile to choose one or two locations as a base and explore the surrounding area without having to move on constantly.

And if you decide to visit a winery, remember to book in advance and organise your travel responsibly if you’re going to take part in a wine tasting.

La Rioja is one of those destinations where it’s well worth spending time enjoying both the scenery and the food.

Sierra de Francia: stone villages and traditional cuisine

In the south of Salamanca, there is another region that is particularly attractive in autumn.

The Sierra de Francia combines mountains, forests and villages that have retained much of their traditional architecture.

La Alberca is one of the best known.

Its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and balconies create an atmosphere that seems frozen in time.

A stroll through the village on a crisp October morning is an experience that encourages you to slow down.

But this area is also renowned for its cuisine.

Cured meats, pork products, pulses and traditional dishes are all part of a cuisine closely linked to the countryside.

Mogarraz, Miranda del Castañar and San Martín del Castañar are other towns well worth exploring.

Each one has its own character, but they all share that sense of authenticity that makes getaways to the Spanish countryside so special.

When travelling by motorhome, it is best to plan a leisurely route, checking in advance which access routes and car parks are permitted, as some historic town centres have streets that are too narrow for large vehicles.

Asturias: cider, cheeses and hearty stews

We bring our culinary journey to a close in northern Spain.

Asturias is a destination that can be enjoyed all year round, but autumn has a special charm.

The forests are changing colour, the mountains are beginning to be shrouded in mist, and restaurants are regaining that cosy atmosphere that we all crave when the temperatures drop.

Here, the food is an integral part of the trip.

Asturian fabada is probably one of the region’s best-known dishes, but the region’s cuisine has much more to offer.

Artisan cheeses, cider, traditional stews and mountain produce turn any getaway into an experience brimming with flavours.

Cangas de Onís could be a good starting point for exploring eastern Asturias.

From there, you can explore small villages, wander through the countryside and discover stunning natural areas.

Another option is to visit towns such as Villaviciosa, which has particularly strong links to the cider-making tradition.

The interesting thing about Asturias is that you don’t need to seek out top-class restaurants to enjoy its cuisine.

Often, a small village cider house can serve up one of the best meals of your trip.

And after a day spent travelling through the mountains and along country roads, few things are more appealing than sitting down to enjoy a hot meal.

The joy of travelling in search of the flavours of each region

One of the great advantages of organising a culinary tour by motorhome is that you can adapt your journey to whatever you come across along the way.

You might come across a local market and decide to stop off.

Or visit a small, traditional bakery where they still make typical local products.

Perhaps someone will recommend a family-run restaurant in a nearby village.

It’s those little decisions that end up giving the trip its character.

Because gastronomy isn’t just about trying different dishes.

It is also a way of learning about the culture, customs and history of each place.

And when you’re travelling without a particularly strict timetable, it’s much easier to leave room for those discoveries.

Tips for organising a culinary getaway in a motorhome

Before you set off, it’s worth finding out which produce is in season in the region you’re planning to visit.

Not all regions observe the same traditions or have the same harvest dates.

It is also a good idea to check the opening hours of restaurants and markets, particularly in small towns where some establishments may be closed on certain days of the week.

If you’re planning to buy local produce, a motorhome offers the convenience of a small kitchen and space to carry food.

That said, it is important to store them correctly and to ensure that fresh produce is kept at the correct temperature.

Another key aspect is car park planning.

Many historic towns have narrow streets or areas with restricted access, so it is best to look for authorised car parks suitable for motorhomes and explore the town centres on foot.

And if you decide to combine fine dining with hiking trails, remember to check the weather forecast before you set off.

Autumn can bring some spectacular days, but also sudden changes in the weather.

Autumn is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace

There’s something special about rounding off an autumn day after discovering a new village.

Perhaps you’ve spent the morning walking amongst chestnut trees.

You’ve tried a traditional dish you’d never had before.

And you’ve found a little shop where you can buy local produce for dinner.

When you return to the motorhome, another part of the journey begins.

Make something simple.

Open a bottle of water or enjoy a hot drink.

Sitting by the window as dusk begins to fall outside.

These are moments that don’t usually feature in tourist guides.

But they are often the ones we remember best.

Because travelling is also about realising that you don’t have to do anything spectacular to enjoy an extraordinary experience.

Discover the flavours of autumn with Caravan Hill

At Caravan Hill, we believe that
